Founded in 2009, The Shift Theatre had its inaugural season at The Dog Theatre in Footscray producing two works: the Australian premiere of Nilo Cruz’ Two Sisters and a Piano and Fred, by acclaimed Australian playwright Beatrix Christian. 2010 and 2011 saw The Shift Theatre working on the development of The Girls in Grey. This had a highly successful season at Theatre Works in St Kilda in 2012. The Girls in Grey toured Victoria in 2013 and Lost in Ringwood premiered at La Mama. In 2014 The Girls in Grey toured N.S.W, Habitual Criminal had a development showing at La Mama and Seeding Local Stories workshops were run in Benalla. In 2015 The Girls in Grey toured again in Victoria and W.A. Hallowed Ground-Women Doctors in War had a development showing at La Mama in 2016, followed by further development in 2017 and a full season at La Mama in 2018. In 2019 Hallowed Ground toured to Adelaide Fringe, regional Victoria and Edinburgh Fringe. In 2020 The Shift Theatre has worked on the developments of #No Exemptions and Garage Girls.
